Ecosystems: Water: Oceans: The Food Chain

The food chain underwater is interesting and diverse. It has many different "tiers" that start from the sun to the Orcas and the Great White Shark. Note that while the sun is not listed it is completely needed for life to flourish.

Red = eaten by.
Green = eats

Tier 6: Plankton. The base of the food chain, plankton aren't just herbivores. Their are carnivorous plankton that interestingly eat herbivorous plankton.

Zooplankton:

Carnivorous plankton
Herbivorous plankton
Krill
Whales(Sperm whales, humpbacks, etc)

Zooplankton.

Tier 5: Krill, shrimp, crayfish, etc and small fish. These are small creatures that are eaten by bigger fish and whales.

Krill:

Whales(Sperm whales, humpbacks, etc)
Some fishes

All forms of plankton

Shrimp, crayfish, etc

Many forms of fish that are bigger

Small fish, debris

Small fish:

Whales(Sperm whales, humpbacks, etc)
Bigger fish

Small scraps of food
Fish poop(Only for some)
Debris

Tier 4: Bigger fish and squid. Big fish and squid that are eaten by sharks and eat small fish.

Squid:

Sharks
Whales(the bigger kind of squid are eaten by whales)

Fish(Mainly Squid but some bigger fish also do the same)

Bigger fish:

Sharks, Orcas, Dolphins and sea lions, seals and the like

Small fish, shrimp, crayfish

Tier 3: Dolphins, Sea lions and seals and Whales. As big as some of these creatures get, they are still preyed on others and humans have been known to cast nets that injure and kill whales. Dolphins are extremely smart and can be trained to do tricks.

Dolphins

Sharks

Fish
Some squid

Sea Lions and seals

Orcas and sharks

Fish(but some namely the leopard seal are dangerous and eat a variety of things)

Whales:

Orcas and sharks

Krill
Small fish
Crayfish(some of the time)
Plankton

Tier 2: Sharks. It may seem like the food chain ends here but it goes on further yet. These animals are preyed on some of the time by the top predator.

Orca

Fish

Sea lions and seals

Squid

Tier 1: The Orca Whale. Preyed on by nothing and with its only threat as pollution and climate change from humans, the food chain ends here.

Fish
Seals and sea lions
Sharks

Food chains are significant and interesting. They can reveal what impact humans can have on the ocean and life itself. The ocean food chain is damaged by humans via climate change and pollution, the food chain can be disrupted and if one of the members of the food chain dies out or is in critical danger it affects the entire food chain.
