Spinosaurus size

Spinosaurus size has been heavily debated and changed as new discoveries have been made and named. So let's dive into the facts starting with weight.

As for the newest studies, it estimates Spinosaurus at 8.2-8.8 tons. Of course, this is subject to change. After all, Spinosaurus used to be estimated at 22 tons which is impossible and then fell over the years to 3 tons. Then it rose back up and now seats at a decent spot of 8.2-8.8 tons. My older posts on Spinosaurus estimate it at really high weights and sizes which is inaccurate. The average of the Spinosaurus weight was likely 8.4 tons. However, others think that it is possible Spinosaurus may have been even larger and that is because of a certain Sigilmassasaurus brevicollis.

Sigilmassasaurus was found and described in 1996 it was slightly bigger and heavier than Spinosaurus. However, the latest update on Sigilmassasaurus waved it as synonymous with Spinosaurus though other bloggers and researchers still heavily debate this using headlines like Sigilmassasaurus is Spinosaurus and so on. And others such as ResearchGate state it as valid. I think that it is probably somewhere in between. But I won't use the estimates for S. brevecollis in this post.

Spinosaurus length has also been constantly subject to change starting at 18 meters and then falling to 15 meters and also 14 meters. However, the latest studies state 13.7 meters in terms of length. In my own beliefs, Spinosaurus was probably 13.7-14 meters but I am not a scientist and 13.7 meters is based on the fossils.

Of course, when new updates arrive, this content would be outdated and I will probably update it or post another post with updates.
