2007 December National Geographic Magazine Blog

Hi. Today I will be writing about a featured article in the 2007 December National Geographic magazine.

Let's begin.

BIZARRE DINOSAURS: Many dinosaurs were bizarre, strange and not well understood. This include Carnotaurus, Mononykus, Masiakasaurus and Spinosaurus.

Carnotaurus had bull-like horns, tiny arms and maybe plates on its back. The strength of Carnotaurus is unknown but it was likely very powerful.

Mononykus had one arm on each of its arm. Its arms were most likely used for digging up insects. However, Mononykus may have had short arms relative to its height.

If this was the case , then it probably hunted hovering insects.

Masiakasaurus had front teeth that stuck out. It probably found this feature useful in hunting, it was quick and  nimble, so that it could hunt small reptiles and mammals or escape from large carnivorous dinosaurs. It was also very agile, able to turn, twist or jump quickly.

Spinosaurus deserved the name "Spinosaurus". It had a large spine. Recent studies show it had a weird spine and an equally weird tail. It had curved teeth and was great at fishing.

Conclusion: We don't know why Carnotaurus had bull horns or what was the funcion of Spinosaurus' spine or all of these other dinosaur mysteries. There are possible explanations for that matter, but they might be wrong. Perhaps, it's best to leave them as mysteries.
