2007 June National Geographic magazine blog

Hi! Today I will be doing a featured article in the 2007 June National Geographic magazine. Let's begin.

LIFE AT THE EDGE: In 1997, ice seemed invulnerable. Then, in 2007 ice was melting quickly. An ice-free Arctic is possible, at least in summer. This threatens many animals like polar bears, seals and whales. The ice covering the Arctic is shrinking fast. An ice-free Arctic is like a garden without soil. If heat continues rising the Arctic can be ice-free permanently. Ice is nourishing a blue and white world.  Melting ice is bad for Arctic animals. Disappearing sea ice is forcing polar bears to make longer, riskier swims.

Bowhead whales are endangered due to whalers and disappearing sea ice is not good for the food of bowheads or bowheads themselves. Rising global temperatures are can change the Arctic and its food chain forever, Hotter seas are bad for phytoplankton and the Arctic food chain rests on phytoplankton. If this does not change, the Arctic and its food chain is doomed forever.

Comments

  1. Apart from climate change, human activities or disturbances such as entanglement in fishing gear and vessel strikes are also threatening factors to marine life.
