2018 May National Geographic Magazine Blog

Today I will be doing a 2018 National Geographic entry. Let's begin!

Around 65.5 million years ago, a asteroid wiped out all the dinosaurs except one group - birds.

Why didn't this group die? How did they survive? Let me explain.

The first bird that could fly evolved 150 million years ago. Its name was Archaeopteryx. Its wings were flimsy.

Around 125 million years ago, Microraptor evolved. Its wings were less flimsy than Archaeopteryx, but still were flimsy. However, Microraptor had four wings.

All these "early birds" probably glided.

Itchyornis dispar evolved 90 million years ago. And it looked like a strange duck.

67 million years ago, came Vegavis iaai, a relative of today's duck.

(They are the flying birds not the other "bird").

60 million years ago came the Waimanu manneringi.

55 million years ago, the Lithonis vulturinus existed.

These birds survived because they were small.

Though these species are now extinct, other bird species still thrive. Conclusion: I conclude that birds are related to dinosaurs. Though they are not part of the family tree dinosauria.

Bye!
